Q: What is Acne?
A: Acne is a genetic disorder of the skin. More specifically it is a disorder within the hair follicle. The follicle produces more dead cells than it can slough off. These dead skin cells combine with oil (sebum) in the follicle to create a plug (blackhead, open comedones & whiteheads closed comedones). This plug traps bacteria also called propioni bacterium acnes, within the follicle, which thrive in an anaerobic (non-oxygenated) environment. This whole process is also known in scientific terms as Retention Hyperkeratosis. There are two keys to successfully treating acne topically:
1. We must help the follicle slough off the dead skin cells with a daily exfoliating product such as Poly-Slough EXFOLIATE or the
End-Zit.Blemish Control Cleanser. These products both contain Hydroxy Acids.2. We must introduce an Antibacterial to kill the bacteria deep within the follicle. This can be accomplished with a daily application of the

Q: What is the difference between Alpha Hydroxy Acid (Glycolic) and Beta (Salicylic) Hydroxy Acid?
A: Both products are Hydroxy Acids meant to exfoliate dead skin cells. They are non-toxic fruit and herbal acids made from sugar cane (Glycolic) and Winter Green leaves (Salicylic). The difference in terms of treating acne is Glycolic Acid can cause redness to sensitive skins. Salicylic Acid tends to be not as irritating to sensitive skins. Both Hydroxy Acids have the same effect of sloughing off the dead skin cells.

Q: Are there certain things I can be doing that can be contributing and/or aggravating my acne?
A: There sure are. There are lifestyle factors that can contribute to your acne condition. They are as follows:
1. The number one factor that affects acne is STRESS!!! I know everyone faces stress in their lives. However there are some things we need to do to avoid acne flare-ups such as get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night on a CONSISTENT basis. When we sleep our body is rejuvenating and repairing itself it is for this reason that we must rest. Okay this isnt news to anybody but I am going to repeat it: daily exercise and proper nutrition also reduces the stress our bodies are experiencing.
2. Iodides in your diet can aggravate your acne. They (i.e., chips, crackers), kelp products, some forms of sea food (squid, crab) beef liver, soy sauce, MSG, vitamin supplements, turkey and asparagus.
3. Fabric softeners should be avoided especially the sheets used in the dryer because they contain oils that can clog your follicles.
It is the oils that make the clothes soft and contribute to your acne condition. Use detergents like: Cheer Free liquid detergent, All Free and Clear detergent, or Tide Free detergent.
4. DO NOT sunbath (i.e., layout). Aside from being the number one cause of skin cancer and pre-maturing aging it is also causing you to get more pimples. Lets think about it, the sun damages your skin via the tanning/burning process thereby creating more dead skin cells which = clogged follicles which = more pimples. Sometimes the pimples may take a month or two to show up but believe me they will come. 5. Drink 7-8 glasses of water a day. 10 glasses would be optimal, but if your anything like me its sometimes tough to get in the 8 glasses. Remember your skin is the largest organ of your body and is the first to lose moisture and become dehydrated.
6. Do not pick your pimples. Picking your pimples can cause the follicular wall to rupture thereby inviting greater inflammation and greater scarring.
7. Read your cosmetic labels. Some cosmetic ingredients are so potent that
They can cause a form of acne called Acne Cosmetica in acne prone women as well as those women not genetically acne prone. The ingredients are able to penetrate the pore and cause blackheads which are called comedones. That is where the name Comedogenic came from. Some Comedogenic ingredients to look for are: Isopropyl isosterate, Isopropyl Myristrate, , Lauric Acid, coconut butter, Acetylated Lanolin, PEG 16 lanolin. By all means this is not meant to be a complete list of Comedogenic ingredients, however it is important to remember to stay away from cosmetics that contain derivatives of Lanolin, analogs of Isopropyl Myristrate, Laureth 4 and D & C red dyes. END-ZIT.8. The following Drugs can either induce acne or cause the condition to worsen:
a). Steroid/Testosterone Injection or Pills
b). Danazol and Danocrine- sometimes given to women for fertility problems or edometriosis. This drug also causes excessive hair growth.
c). Lithium/Dilantin or drugs that effect the central nervous system can flare up an acne condition...\Drugs that cause sun sensitivity.doc
d). marijuana contributes to acne. There is new evident that Marijuana first raises then lowers testosterone levels. Skin reacts to unnatural hormone fluctuations.
9. Some forms of Birth control pills can worsen your acne. Researchers have found that male hormone (Androgen) dominate pills usually worsen acne. Where as female hormone (estrogen) dominate pills usually help acne. The main reason the male dominate pill causes acne is the testosterone which increases the production of sebum(oil). Remember in acne prove individuals the dead skin cells are not sloughing off the way they are supposed to and they are producing a high rate (Retention Hyper Keratosis). These dead skin cells combine with the oil to form plugs in the follicles also called blackheads. These blackheads can turn into
papules, pustules and cysts. Some high level Estrogen pills you may want to speak with your gynecologist about are: Enovid-E, Ovulen, Enovid, Demulen, Orthonovum.
